World Environment Day: How We're Helping to Save Our Planet

Friday, June 4, 2021

It’s World Environment Day and this year the focus is centred around Ecosystem Restoration. So what is “Ecosystem Restoration” and what are we doing as a brand and business to help achieve this?

What is Ecosystem Restoration?

Ecosystem Restoration is all about rebuilding and restoring our natural environment and habitats, from forests, to wetlands to coasts. “It means bringing back plants and animals from the brink of extinction, from the peaks of mountains to the depths of the sea. But it also includes the many small actions everyone can take, every day: growing trees, greening our cities, rewilding our gardens or cleaning up trash alongside rivers and coasts.”

Why is it important?

One football pitch of forest is destroyed every three seconds through deforestation and other human activity. And if you’re a fan of our waterless ethos, you’ll already know that our wetlands are disappearing three times faster than our forests, yet they store twice as much carbon. Not only are these ecosystems essential for controlling climate change, they’re also depended upon by thousands of species critical to maintaining balance to all life on Earth.

What are we doing?

We are incredibly proud to have established a corporate partnership with Fauna & Flora International, to which we’ve pledged a minimum of £5000 annually to help with their efforts to safeguard the long-term future of the world’s threatened species and the habitats on which they depend for survival. From rainforests to oceans, FFI continuously strives to protect habitats that are vital to the future of life on Earth, including our own. FFI’s passion and energy is dedicated to saving species driven to the brink of extinction by human activity, through support of local communities who have the most to lose from the destruction of our fragile ecosystems.

Furthermore, thanks to you, we’ve planted over 2500 trees in 2021, removing 1,700,860 lbs of CO2 through our partnership with EcoDrive LLC. And it doesn’t stop there. We’ve also created 25 days of work for locals in Madagascar who have been essential in helping us to achieve this goal.

We are constantly looking for ways to help save our planet and become more sustainable as a business. In November 2020, we established our partnership with EcoDrive LLC to help us achieve our mission of becoming a carbon neutral (and eventually negative!) business. Not only do we plant a Mangrove tree for every order placed through our website, we also work with EcoDrive to offset all of the emissions produced throughout the supply chain -from sourcing our ingredients, to shipping to trade partners - by calculating the weight, mileage and mode of transport and planting enough trees to not only compensate, but overcompensate for the emissions produced, from source to skin.

Why Mangroves?

Mangroves are one of the most effective and economic methods of offsetting carbon emissions, absorbing 680lbs over their lifetime.

Where and Who Plants Our Trees?

Our Mangroves are planted in Madagascar by locals who provide quarterly updates on the trees we plant, helping to alleviate poverty and providing full traceability. The land on which the trees are planted is usually owned by local tribal communities or federally owned national forests and as well as benefiting the earth, our partnership will create employment for local villagers living in poverty. Amounting to one workday for every 100 trees planted, the community takes part in every step, from collecting the seeds to sewing them.

How can you help?

Small things really can make a big difference. Rewilding your garden, planting trees, being conscious about of what we eat, using less energy and water and cleaning up our environment are all ways we can help to rectify the damage we’ve caused.
